Mobile phone manufacturer Nokia has just released a new firmware for the Nokia N97 handset, which arrives as version 20.0.019, 20.1.021 or 20.2.019, depending on where exactly you are from. This new firmware is set to deliver a few nice little improvements, although keep in mind not all N97 model numbers are currently supported.
Some of the more interesting changes that come with this new firmware include:
- Kinetic scrolling within the UI, lists and any item larger than your display.
- Pressing a key for more than a second will now bring up the associated symbol or numeric digit. – Bug fixed to ensure music player how displays album art more reliably.
- Six new social media and service widgets have been added by default.
- Various photograph and video improvements.
- Optional offline mode for the home screen widgets.
- The N Gage client is now included.
- Ovi Maps 3.1 is now included.
- Ovi Store and Ovi Contacts are now integrated.
- The Sync system has been improved.
If you own a Nokia N97 and are interesting in upgrading to the latest version of firmware you can do so on Nokia’s Software Update. To access it simply scroll to the “SW Update” in your mobile phone.
Although the Nokia N97 has built in User Data Preservation, otherwise known as UDP, we cannot stress it enough that it is important to have a complete back up of all of your data and not just “risk it” as so many people do, only to find that they’ve lost everything. No UDP is completely flawless and unless you want to be tracking down phone numbers for the next 6 months we encourage you to take the necessary precautions before an update.

Finnish phone manufacturer Nokia had been concerned that the current economic downturn was going to hit them hard with a decline in sales of their award winning high-end smartphones. However, they have been pleasantly surprised with news released from Vodafone highlighting that merely a month of the release of their highly acclaimed N97 the phone is topping the list for sales on that network.
While sales are still 15% lower than this time last year, Nokia have seen a slight increase during the past few months. This seems to suggest that people have felt the worst of the current recession and are now starting to purchase new phones again. This suspicion is supported by the fact that Vodafone’s top selling phone list primarily consists of mid to high end phones, such as the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic, which came in second, and the Sony Ericsson W595 at third. Other phones to feature in the list include the Samsung S8300 Tocco Ultra Edition, Blackberry Storm 9500 and HTC Magic.
Not featured on the list is Apple’s iPhone 3GS which some sources suggest is still the top selling phone around with many people considering it the must-have device of the summer. Mark Loughgran, MD of Nokia UK, is not one of those people however, dubbing the Apple device ‘a big disappointment.’ No surprise that the head of Nokia would say this perhaps, but Loughgran points out that the new iPhone 3GS does not make any significant improvements on the previous Apple incarnation, even the upgraded camera is still below par, while the N97 succeeds in all areas that the iPhone is lagging behind in.

Of course, we can’t all be submerged in work 24 hours a day. We have to rest; and you can do some quality R & R with your own mobile phone. At least that’s what the Nokia promises when they released the Nokia N97 back in December 2008 (in Spain).
What’s new with N97
The Nokia N97 is the ‘team captain’ of the N-Series, representing years of research and development of Nokia developers. It represents Nokia’s own entry into the field of personal telecommunications and computing, as well. Together with the newly launched Ovi digital services from Nokia, the N97 was designed to be Nokia’s very own iPhone or Blackberry Storm.
User-friendly features
To save space and create and ergonomic and truly portable N97, Nokia used a slider form factor to join a full-sized QWERTY keyboard and a touchscreen display with glare resistive quality. Nokia introduces their own version of geo-tagging: it’s called So-Lo or social location. Instead of just tagging pictures, the Nokia N97 can actually update social networking sites where you are at the moment. With the right tweaking, you can definitely enjoy a streamlined version of your social networking sites with the Nokia N97.
Storage & multimedia
The Nokia N97 can support up to 48 gigabytes of extra storage, through its MicroSD card slot. Unlike a younger version of the Apple iPhone, which can support only 8 gigabytes, the Nokia N97 had been crafted outright with a whopping 32 gigabytes of on-board internal memory. That’s like having two MicroSD cards.
Nokia N97 also has excellent support for video and audio formats, with a playback capacity of 1.5 days. As for Nokia N97’s imaging capacity, the phone has been manufactured with Carl Zeiss optics. Video recording operates with an aspect ratio of 16:9 and can produce DVD-quality videos that can probably be saved in MPEG4 or 3gpp formats. Nokia would be selling the N97 is for 550 euro.

Finding a trusty mobile phone minus the complicated features (that you probably won’t use) is difficult. We’re fortunate that Nokia did not join the bandwagon of mobile phone manufacturers who were keener on loading their devices with features that won’t be usable to everyone. The same cannot be said for the Nokia N97, because of its people-centered approach to functionality and experience enhancement.
Enhancing lives
One of the key principles in mobile phones is always, enhancement. If the mobile phone fails to enhance the life of the user, then it’s been designed to be a simple implement rather than a dynamic communications tool with various functions. The Nokia N97 was designed to avoid this conundrum. For one, the Nokia N97 would be able to connect via WLAN and GPRS/EDGE and would be able to provide an efficient web experience with a larger screen built to show the true form of websites. From the desktop to your pocket, the Nokia N97 creates a seamless connection between you and the digital world that you’ve been accustomed to.
Social location
The Nokia N97 has also been installed with a feature that acts as a social compass, telling people where you are, and sharing your images and videos along the way. This feature is called A-GPS. The A-GPS capability in the Nokia N97 is a “smart” feature because it can update itself and can adapt to changing environments. As long as the Nokia N97 has access to the Web, it can tell people where you currently are.
Conversely, the Nokia N97 has the capability to seek the same type of information and update you regarding the goings on in the lives of your contacts. In this regard, Nokia N97 seems to improve upon the Inner Circle principle of the HTC Snap. While the Ovi services focuses exclusively on letting others into your digital world, Nokia has made sure that the N-Series is all about you.

When we say storm in the smartphone/mobile phone field, we really do mean something that’s so innovative and classy that it’s hard not to take notice. Stepping into the mobile phone arena is like watching hundreds of fighters vying for the crown.
Nevertheless, with the arrival of the Nokia N97, it appears that this sophisticated fighter simply arrived and took the crown for itself. Maximizing the available networking capabilities of other smartphones, the Nokia N97 is indeed a force to reckon with.
Built for entertainment
We can say that the Nokia N97 was built for entertainment because it is has been equipped with one of the most massive widescreen displays at 3.5 inches. Only a few contenders can match that; we’re thinking that the Blackberry 9300 Gemini would probably be able to match it, only RIM still hasn’t shown us what the Gemini would actually look like.
Apart from the large display, both personal communication and Internet has been made more accessible with the QWERTY keyboard in its slide-out, landscape orientation. For those who get confused with QWERTY keypads that are still arranged like a regular phone keypad, you would simply love the unique keyboard structure employed in the Nokia N97.
Web, games and more
Because Nokia wants to tap into various threads of the telecommunications and multimedia entertainment market, it has made sure that the N97 would be able to master all the basic needs of modern consumers. For example, you have quick access to your favorite website through the home screen but at the same time you can play games with the N97 the same way you would with a regular desktop PC or a PSP.
The slide-out form factor is simply genius because the keypad won’t disturb the viewing of web content whenever it’s the case. The N97 is already being shipped in the UK. The price according to Nokia is 550 euro before taxes.

When it comes to the Internet, Nokia was always last to arrive. But it’s a good thing that Nokia came up with the Nokia N97, because they’re proving that they still have what it takes to battle the innovators of the smartphone industry. Brands like Blackberry and even Google’s own Android smartphone would be given a run for their money with Nokia N97. The Nokia N97 has been in the market for only a few months, but it’s already being proffered by mainstream consumers.
Sophisticated features
The N97 was said to have been produced with different processing speeds and multiple connection speeds to maximize the available resources from your own personal location. Because it is a sophisticated device, the N97 was built with a QWERTY keypad and has been launched alongside the Nokia Ovi series as well. Nokia’s own version of the Internet is “your personal Internet”, emphasizing a kind of interconnectivity with the world, taken to another level.
Widescreen
The Nokia N97 has been equipped with a 3.5-inch widescreen display, with an aspect ratio of 16:9. What differentiates the widescreen display of the Nokia N97 from other widescreen displays is that you aren’t stuck with the UI that Nokia installed. If you prefer, you can simply download and install widgets from your favorite website or from Nokia itself. With a simple touch on the “home screen” of the Nokia N97, you can access every bit of information that you might need, from news to your favorite social networking websites like Plurk and Facebook.
Like the Apple iPhone, which has been installed with Apple’s very own Safari web browse, the Nokia N97 has been installed with an efficient Nokia-made browser that’s capable of showing real websites in their actual form, maximizing the 16:9 widescreen display.
Whether you’re out to blog or chat, you would surely be at home with the new Nokia N97. The N97 is said to cost EUR 550.

Nokia N97 has taken mobile phones from Nokia one step ahead. It is a premium handset which paves way for the N Series to evolve from a regular mobile phone, to a creation which has the capability to offer the consumer all the features which can be seen in the iPhone. It is one of the best alternatives to the favorite iPhone. This mobile phone is like a mobile computer and offers excellent access to Internet. Nokia N97 comes with an integrated GPS, and the handset has the ability to connect you with a number of geo-location networks. It also offers entrée to different types of maps to find your way without losing the directions. The Nokia N97 offers total web browsing of every kind of websites.
In fact Nokia N97 is an amalgamation of several kinds of phones like the earlier mentioned iPhone as well as the Google G1 Phone. Nokia N97’s 31/2 inches screen dictates the facade of the handset and you can only see small button on the underneath left side corner. It can be used as the shortcut keys for the multimedia features famous of the N series. There is a power button and a 3.5 millimeter headphone jack at the apex of the Nokia N97. In fact this Nokia handset is only a little bit bigger and thicker compared to the iPhone. When the QWERTY keypad of the Nokia N97 is moved it will remind you of the HTC TyTN II.
The presentation of the Nokia N97 has been very impressive especially in the demos. It can be compared to some of the other mobile phones from Nokia like the 5800 XpressMusic. The interface of Nokia N97 is very fast and receptive and this phone has been designed for the market who does not mind spending money on mobile phones.

Nokia launched the Nokia N97 in December 2008 with one thing in mind: to bring portable communication and the Internet closer to the mainstream consumer. According to Nokia, the N97 is by far the most advanced mobile phone in its class of devices and even sports one of the largest displays around at 3.5 inches. The display is even larger than the display of the Gigabyte GSmart S1200 at 3.1 inches.
Key features
The Nokia N97 is attractive mainly because of its streamlined slider design. Unlike other sliders and flip phones, the N97 features a full-sized QWERTY keyboard, similar to that of HTC Touch Pro 2 and even Blackberry Storm. Though the orientation and form of the keys are different (traditional parallel keys versus round keys), it’s still nice to use.
Why did Nokia decide on a slider form factor instead of a classical form factor or the candy bar form factor? Since Nokia always focused on the personal predilection of consumers, they wanted the N97 to have an always open appearance so that all your favorite applications and website would be readily available in just one glance.
Flagship line of N-phones
What differentiates the Nokia N97 is that it has followed the trend of computer manufacturers. If in the past, a dedicated machine operated with only one particular speed (unless you upgrade), that cannot be said for the N-Series today. Aside from multiple data transfer options and speeds, the models have been built with multiple sensors and different memory options. Depending on your location and budget, you can make the N97 a very flexible business tool indeed.
According to Jonas Geust (VP of Nokia), the N97 is the most sophisticated computer/mobile phone in existence today and it plans to stay that way for a long time. If the developers at Nokia had played their cards right, they would be reaping a large portion of the market in the coming years with the N97.
