HTC Phone Lineup: Recap and Rumors

Tuesday, May 25th, 2010

HTC Legend (4)HTC is making plenty of waves recently and their latest line of smart phones is certainly a big reason why.

The list starts off with none other than the HTC Desire. This Android smart phone is the best in the line, in fact, it can even be said that this new phone is one of the best Android devices out in the market. So far, it is only matched by the Nexus One –and the two phones share the same manufacturer. This device comes packed with a 1GHz CPU, a 5 mega pixel camera and a 3.7 inch AMOLED capacitive touch screen.

Along with the HTC Desire, another handset was launched, the HTC Legend. This new device did not have the same edge as the Desire, but it still packed some pretty practical features. The display is smaller at 3.3 inches (but at least it was AMOLED) and it had a much slower 700MHz CPU. Like the Desire, this phone comes with a 5 mega pixel CPU.

HTC Desire (2)New to the HTC smart phone line is the addition of the newly launched HTC Wildfire. This little Android smart phone is specs-wise inferior to the Desire and the Legend, but it still gets the job done. While the other phones as more expensive, the Wildfire’s cheaper hardware focuses more on the social networking aspects –providing users with plenty of coverage and of course Facebook and Twitter integration.

Next up on HTC’s to do list is the Mondrian. This smart phone is still pretty much unknown in terms of specs. But rumors that it could possibly be running on a much newer Snapdragon processor has placed the estimates that the device’s CPU might be clocked at 1.3 GHz. It has also been reported that the new phone will have a 4.3 inch touch screen or larger.

HTC Sales are Up

Thursday, April 8th, 2010

HTCTo say that HTC has been continuously successful in the past few years is pretty common news, but getting the cold hard numbers still makes the update pretty interesting: the facts are in, HTC has earned £800 million in profits last 2009. This is a major increase from their previous performance last 2008.

Originally, it was predicted that HTC would be able to earn up to £700 million last year. Surpassing this already big expectation is a testament to the quality of products that the Taiwanese manufacturer produces.

HTC had its early beginnings in the tech industry with its pocket PCs. As a partner to Windows, they helped develop many important firsts with mobile electronics. A couple of years back, HTC signed up with Google as one of the first members of the Open Handset Alliance which aimed to develop the Android operating system.

HTC then made its mark among mobile phone users with the HTC Dream –the very first Android smart phone to be made. The manufacturer once again made its mark in the Android industry by helping Google develop and manufacture the Nexus One handset.

This year, HTC has a very impressive list of devices that are going to be launched. First off are the Android devices Desire and Legend. The Desire is basically an HTC branded Nexus One which uses the Sense UI. The Legend is the successor to the HTC Hero. Also coming this year is the Touch Brew smart phone (which uses the Brew OS) as well as a yet to be named Windows Phone 7 device.

HTC will also be facing Apple in court soon as the Cupertino developers have filed a lawsuit that covers 20 patents for hardware and software technologies that are allegedly being infringed by HTC devices.

Nexus One Launching on Mid April

Tuesday, March 16th, 2010

Google Nexus One 4The Google phone is finally heading to the UK and while we love Google and HTC’s work on this device, it is hard to say that the Nexus One will be a sales hit when it finally launches.

Mobile network operator Vodafone could help soften the blow on Google as they also offer the device to their customers but with the device exclusively available online, it is hard to see folks passing up the HTC Desire just to get the Nexus One –particularly when the two devices are quite similar.

And similar is a bit of an understatement, both devices come with a 3.7 inch AMOLED capacitive touch screen, the latest Android operating system, a 5 mega pixel camera and of course, a 1GHz Snapdragon CPU. The only difference on the Desire is that the camera can shoot videos in 720p while the Nexus One has advanced voice recognition system that even enables speech to text.

The mid April launch also places the device precariously between two major launch dates. The HTC Desire, the HTC Legend and the XPERIA X10 are all expected to come out by the first two weeks of April while Apple’s budget killing iPad touch screen tablet is expected to be on shelves by the end of April.

Despite the high end hardware and amazing features of the Nexus One, the phone has not fared so well in terms of sales due to Google’s choice in distribution methods. In what some call a move to keep on good terms with their Android partners, Google has also painted itself into a corner by making their device available only online. Original estimates of a possible 3.5 million sales have been reduced to just a million units.

HTC Legend Confirmed for UK Release

Thursday, March 4th, 2010

HTC Legend (4)Vodafone’s 2010 lineup is impressive with the wide range of smart phones that they are offering and they are starting things off with the March release of the HTC Legend.

The smart phone comes equipped with the new Google Android 2.1 Éclair operating system –and it will be one of the first available devices aside from the Nexus One to have this latest version of the Google mobile platform. Aside from the new 2.1 features, the Legend will also have the benefit of having HTC’s very own Sense user interface which adds additional functionality to the device.

Hardware wise, this is one intriguing smart phone. The specs are mostly mid range- placing the device at a very reasonable cost for the tech-minded folks who are not going to spend a few extra hundreds just for the Snapdragon powered Android types. The Qualcomm 600 MHz CPU is already more than enough for handling most of the basic processing needs though we do expect some slowdowns from this device. The 3.2 inch AMOLED capacitive touch screen is more than sufficient in terms of size, quality and accuracy of tracking finger input. Lastly, the 5 megapixel camera does an excellent job at handling images and video recording. It comes with LED flash and auto focus so shooting in difficult, cluttered locations in badly lit areas is not that big of a problem.

Of course, users can expect the usual array of smart phone features such as microUSB support, Bluetooth, WiFi, GPS, 3G, a 3.5 mm audio jack and interestingly, an optical trackpad.

Aside from the HTC Legend, Vodafone will later be offering the Apple iPad, Nexus One, HTC Desire and several other impressive devices for March and April.

MWC: Lasting Impressions

Wednesday, February 24th, 2010

HTC DesireSo it has been over a week since the Mobile World Congress, despite all the amount of new information that has sprouted up since, there are several products from MWC that still linger in our minds. Here’s a quick review of some of the most memorable MWC products we have seen.

Google’s Android operating system will be popping up in several new phones starting this coming March with the launch of HTC and Sony Ericsson’s new smart phones. Leading the lineup is the SE XPERIA X10 and the HTC Desire. Both devices sport 1GHz Snapdragon processors.

The X10 comes with a 4 inch TFT capacitive touch screen while the Desire has a 3.7 inch AMOLED capacitive touch screen. SE will also be launching the X10 Mini and X10 Mini Pro (with keyboard) later this year. HTC on the other hand will be following up the Desire with the HTC Legend –the successor to the HTC Hero. The Legend runs on a 600 MHz Qualcomm CPU and has a 3.2 inch AMOLED touch screen and a 5 mega pixel camera.

Samsung will be concentrating on its own mobile platform, the Samsung Bada. The Wave phone, which is the first device to use the Bada OS, will be using a 3.3 inch super AMOLED capacitive touch screen with amazing display quality, a 1GHz processor and a 5 mega pixel camera.

Wrapping up our list of most memorable things from the MWC is Microsoft’s very own “Windows Phone 7” series. The new OS reinvents everything we know about mobile phone. It comes with a user interface that focuses heavily on touch based control –as opposed to previous Windows Mobile OS versions. Expect to see MS’ new platform based on the concept that “the phone is not a PC” by October.

HTC’s New Smart Phones

Friday, February 19th, 2010

HTC Legend (4)HTC is most certainly busy this 2010. They already created the Nexus One and now, they are focusing on their own series of devices.

MWC was definitely a big event for the Taiwanese company as they got to show off three new mobile devices for their line. One missing phone however, is the HTC Scorpion. Right now, we are all ears for any news regarding this upcoming super phone but HTC has been keeping a very tight lid on the details. All we know for know that that the device will be using a new processor running at 1.5 GHz (which, according to most rumors, is pointing to the new Dual Core Snapdragon processor –the new Atom can run just as fast, but given HTC’s close ties with Qualcomm, this is most likely a Snapdragon chip).

Anyway, the new phones shown at the Mobile World Congress are the HTC Desire and the HTC Legend. For those who are not familiar with the Desire, this device was originally named the HTC Bravo and it served as a basis for the Nexus One (and yes, if you do not want to order the Nexus One online, you will not do wrong by buying the Desire). This phone comes with a 3.7 inch AMOLED touch screen, a 5 mega pixel camera and a 1GHz Snapdragon Processor.

Speaking of Android smart phones, the HTC Hero is getting a successor, the HTC Legend. The Legend comes with a 3.2 inch AMOLED touch screen, a 5 mega pixel camera and a 600 MHz Qualcomm processor.

Rounding up the list is the new HTC HD Mini which uses the recently released Windows Mobile 6.5.3 operating system and watered down specs of the HTC HD2.

Android Phones at the MWC

Friday, February 19th, 2010

AndroidMany new Android smart phones debuted at the Mobile World Congress last Sunday. Here’s a quick view of some top picks straight from Barcelona, Spain.

Leading the charge of Android handsets is the HTC Desire. This phone originally appeared as the HTC Bravo and sported many of the hardware specs that people would later attribute to the Nexus One. No surprise there as HTC also made the Google phone. The Desire packs a 1GHz Snapdragon processor, an impressive 5 mega pixel camera that can take D1 quality videos at 720p and a nice 3.7 inch AMOLED capacitive display.

The Desire is not the only Android phone in HTC’s lineup. The new HTC Legend was also present at the MWC where it showed off that impeccable finish on its aluminum casing. The device is considered to be the successor to the award winning HTC Hero Android smart phone. HTC’s Legend runs on a 600 MHz processor and comes with a 3.2 inch AMOLED touch screen display. Both the Desire and the Legend are expected to be released sometime this March.

HTC was not the only company with Android smart phones; Sony Ericsson has its XPERIA X10 waiting to be unleashed, along with a couple of other small surprises. By small surprises, we mean literally. SE unveiled the X10 Mini and the X10 Mini Pro Android smart phones. These two devices are clearly for the low to mid price tag range, a market sector that the X10 cannot possibly compete in. The Mini Pro comes with the exact same specs as the Mini, but it will have a slide out QWERTY keyboard. SE also had another “Pro” device in the form of the Vivaz Pro which was the keyboard loaded edition of the Symbian smart phone.

HTC Legend at MWC?

Monday, February 15th, 2010

HTC LegendThere will be plenty of mobile phones to look forward to at the MWC. While it is unlikely that we will actually get a glimpse of this year’s heavy hitters (the upcoming HTC Scorpion, iPhone 4G and other possible dual-core devices), we are certainly looking forward to see the new Sony Ericsson Aspen with the Windows Mobile 6.5.3 Maldives update. Android devices are also expected to fill up the booths with many manufacturers’ getting their own Android prepped and ready.

We expect that the HTC booth will be buffing up the soon to arrive Snapdragon powered HTC Bravo smart phone. One other thing to look out for in HTC’s MWC lineup is the Legend.

So far, few details have been released about the details since the device was prematurely announced at a leaked document showing off the Taiwanese manufacturer’s phone lineup for this year.

The Legend is pretty familiar for HTC fans because it feels a lot like an improvement of the HTC Hero. An improvement that comes with a faster processor (a Qualcomm 600 MHz compared to the previous 528 MHz) and a better touch screen; 3.2 inches of AMOLED capacitive touch screen goodness to be exact.

The device is shaping up to be something truly worth looking forward to. And if you are the type who would like to get a great smart phone but do not have the budget for the really expensive high-end devices, then the Legend makes for a great fit. While it certainly does not match the Bravo in specs, the cheaper price tag is a significant factor.

So far, it has not been confirmed as to when the Legend will be released, we are not even sure if HTC will have the device ready for this coming weekend.

HTC’s 2010 Line Up Revealed

Wednesday, December 9th, 2009

HTC BravoThe holiday season is always an amazing time, not only do we get to see the latest offerings from major phone manufacturers, this is also the time we get a sneak peek at the devices that will arrive for the coming year. Official or not, news and leaks about upcoming devices are spreading. After the recent series of SE Kurara leaks, we now get to see HTC’s mobile device lineup for next year.

Now in case you are wondering, this is an entirely new batch of mobile phones. Not previously heard of HTC phones -yep, no Touch Brew or Espresso here (despite the two devices just having been released or leaked just a few days ago).

The new phones have nicknames, while we have yet to confirm if these names are final or if they will be changed later on, the names are pretty self-explanatory and will give you an insight to the overall purpose and target market of the device.

Let’s start off with the most unlikely group, the “productivity” line. This series of HTC devices use (ironically) the Windows Mobile 6.5 operating system. We can assume that this is the business series focusing on documents, email and other similar functions. The HTC “Trophy” has a sleek looking design, a flat portrait QWERTY keyboard and a sweet Qualcomm 600 MHz processor. The Photon on the other hand, is also a WinMo phone but with a full capacitive touch screen. Both devices use the TouchFlo 3D UI.

The “Bravo” and “Legend” devices use the Google Android OS, though no details have been given on what version will be used; with the Hero already upgradeable to 2.1, we can safely assume that it will either be version 2.0 or 2.1. The Bravo is an impressive HD-ready media phone with an AMOLED touch screen while the Legend also features a smaller AMOLED screen and similar hardware to the Bravo.
