Google’s Nexus One is Getting the Froyo Update

Thursday, July 1st, 2010

nexus_oneThe Android operating system’s latest update is now available for Nexus One owners. For those wondering, Froyo stands for Frozen Yogurt (the previous Android versions have been named Éclair, Donut and Cupcake –which as one might realize are reverse-alphabetically arranged).

Google’s Nexus One smart phone is considered to be the quintessential Android handset. After all, this is the phone made by the mobile platform’s developer, which means that the device delivers the Android in the way it was meant to be. HTC, a key partner of Google, helped manufacture the handset for the search engine company.

The Nexus One is considered as a high end smart phone – by today’s standards anyway. The device sports a high speed 1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon for handling all apps and other resource heavy functions. The 5 mega pixel camera is a great way to take high resolution photos and videos. With the phone’s 3.7 inch AMOLED capacitive touch screen display, images are rendered beautifully in rich, deep colors.

android-froyoNew to the Android 2.2 Froyo is the inclusion of a new tips widget that provides new users with several useful guides and tips on how to customize a new home page –which is a great experience for users trying to get a grasp of the Nexus One.

Speaking of grasp, it has been confirmed that the new user interface will be affecting how images will be taken. Both video recording and image shoots will be controlled by the new user interface.

Speed and performance are going to be added to the Android 2.2 as well. According to reports, the new Kernel management and addition of better Java handling will make the Android a lot faster than its predecessor. According to Google’s benchmarks, the new OS will be about twice as fast (or even up to three times faster) than the older Android 2.1 Éclair.

HTC’s Short Supply of AMOLED to be Remedied by Sony Super TFT LCD

Tuesday, June 29th, 2010

htc-desireAMOLED has become the Retina Display’s arch enemy. With the number of issues plaguing the iPhone 4’s screen, a lot of Apple fans may be disappointed with their preorder purchases. Actually, the Cupertino giant would have gone for AMOLED technology if not for the lack of units available for use.

That being said, the supply issue is also affecting existing models that already use the super clear display. Makers like Samsung have been having issues regarding the delivery time of the AMOLED technology displays. This problem also affects some HTC manufactured mobile phones out in the market such as the Droid Incredible, Nexus One and HTC Desire. Since a lot of makers go for it, what exactly is so good about AMOLED?

What makes AMOLED so darn irresistible is the number of viewing angles it offers without losing the brilliance, clarity and vibrancy of the displays. It also features, in stark contrast to Apple’s Retina Display, low power consumption. Now, going back to its major drawback (availability), there are now good alternatives for mobile phone manufacturers.

While people were fussing over the AMOLED and Retina Display technology, good old, dependable LCDs have come a long way too. The newer released of LCD technology have more of the same viewing angles, little noticeable difference when it comes to operation under direct sunlight and have very little impact on the device’s battery life.

The solution that HTC have come up with is that they will offer both AMOLED technology displays and LCDs on their mobile phone lines. These Super TFT LCD screens will be supplied by Sony and will be initially available only for their mobile phones that are already out in the market.

It is still unclear whether the units will have some sort of marking on them to help consumers differentiate the two, but they are, reportedly, at par with each other. We will just have to wait to put this to the test.

Pre-Launch: What to Expect with the Samsung Wave

Tuesday, May 18th, 2010

Samsung S8500 Wave (5)There is a new Samsung branded smart phone that will be launched this coming June and it is something of an industry curiosity, the S8500 Wave is the very first handset from the Korean developer to make use of the new first party mobile platform, the Bada OS. The new handset also brings an innovation in the mobile screen technology; the super AMOLED touch screen display.

These two features have debuted when the phone was shown at the Mobile World Congress at Barcelona, Spain last February. There is no doubt that many of those who got to check out the device were impressed with how well the new screen is able to display colors and tones. The rich colors and excellent lighting allows for the super AMOLED screen to show off the visually superior graphics –the technology is being overlooked due to the focus on the emergence of 3D displays.

Samsung’s Bada OS is also gaining a bit of a reputation among the developer community. The Korean manufacturer is heavily pushing for the presence of community and developer support and has just launched several developer challenges in order to get more apps for their new OS. It has been revealed last month that the Bada will be used in four more devices –each less technologically advanced than the Wave smart phone.

For a phone debuting two major features, the Wave comes packed with the technological backing to compete with high end Androids and other smart phones. The CPU is a high speed 1 GHz CPU –which means that the phone will be able to handle even resource consuming apps. The device also comes with a 3.3 inch using the super AMOLED technology described above and a 5 mega pixel that can handle 720p HD video recording. The device is expected to hit shelves this coming June.
