Nokia seeking to boost sales with smartphones

comparison1Finnish phone manufacturer Nokia had been concerned that the current economic downturn was going to hit them hard with a decline in sales of their award winning high-end smartphones. However, they have been pleasantly surprised with news released from Vodafone highlighting that merely a month of the release of their highly acclaimed N97 the phone is topping the list for sales on that network.

While sales are still 15% lower than this time last year, Nokia have seen a slight increase during the past few months. This seems to suggest that people have felt the worst of the current recession and are now starting to purchase new phones again. This suspicion is supported by the fact that Vodafone’s top selling phone list primarily consists of mid to high end phones, such as the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic, which came in second, and the Sony Ericsson W595 at third. Other phones to feature in the list include the Samsung S8300 Tocco Ultra Edition, Blackberry Storm 9500 and HTC Magic.

Not featured on the list is Apple’s iPhone 3GS which some sources suggest is still the top selling phone around with many people considering it the must-have device of the summer. Mark Loughgran, MD of Nokia UK, is not one of those people however, dubbing the Apple device ‘a big disappointment.’ No surprise that the head of Nokia would say this perhaps, but Loughgran points out that the new iPhone 3GS does not make any significant improvements on the previous Apple incarnation, even the upgraded camera is still below par, while the N97 succeeds in all areas that the iPhone is lagging behind in.
