Mobile Headlines: Android and WP7 in Focus

Wednesday, November 17th, 2010

Microsoft’s Windows Phone 7 was launched just recently and as such, there are issues and problems that need to be addressed –which is always the case with most new operating systems that launch.

However, as much as we would like to say that problems are normal, the current issue for most WP7 owners is jarring: the microSD card used in the device cannot be easily replaced without risking the loss of important data. While some might say that simply taking out the card and making a backup is a good idea; that is where the second problem lies: the card will be formatted in a unique way that renders it directly unreadable –even by the Microsoft run Windows desktop OS.

In short, those who are used to hot swapping SD cards will now be stuck with just one –so better be sure to insert a high capacity card the first time you use it.

In better WP7 news, it has been confirmed that sat nav assistance will now be provided to users via the device’s own maps feature. So far, no specific date on the GPS launch has been given.

HTC has confirmed two things just this week. First off, the Legend will indeed be getting an update and Vodafone users get first dibs over all other Legend users under other operators. According to the latest reports, the update is already online and ready to download.

HTC has also confirmed that it will be venturing to the business market with possibly a new device. While the Taiwan based manufacturer has previously concentrated on devices for the general public, a new wave of phones has been made to cater specifically to the messaging based and high security world of the business market.

Lastly, retailer Dixons has announced that the Android tablet, Toshiba Folio, will no longer be available unless an issue with the device has been fixed.

Toshiba TG01 Gets Free Upgrade

Friday, October 16th, 2009

tg01Widely recognized as one of the most powerful mobile phones to run under the Windows Mobile operating system is the popular Toshiba TG01, which boasts the fabulous Qaulcomm Snapdragon processor. It has only been on the mobile market for a few months now, and in that time has used the Windows Mobile 6.1 OS – however with the release of a new Toshiba TG01 that comes with Windows Mobile 6.5 OS right out of the box, the 6.1 devices are now getting a free update.

The Toshiba TG01 is already available all over Europe, and the company has just posted a free update to Windows Mobile 6.5 on its European site, commenting that; “This new software will make your current TG01 a Windows phone, running Windows Mobile 6.5. This will give you access to the Microsoft Marketplace applications store and My Phone, together with a choice of home screens.”

According to Toshiba, users will have to make sure that their mobile phone meets certain requirements before attempted to perform the update; most specifically that the battery is fully charged and that the update is necessary. If you want to check whether or not the update belong on your Toshiba TG01 handset, go to Start > Settings > System > About > Version, and you will be able to see whether your handset is running under Windows Mobile 6.5 or Windows Mobile 6.1 operating system.

As with any update it is important to back up all of your personal data first, which can be done by moving it either to your computer or to the microSD card in your mobile phone – Windows 6.5 is great, but not worth losing your contact list over.

1GHz Toshiba TG01 Exclusive to Orange

Tuesday, July 14th, 2009

toshiba-tg01-to-be-orange-exclusiveThe much anticipated Toshiba TG01 was released last week at a special Orange event. The phone, which is exclusive to the Orange network, has been attracting attention due to its impressive 1GHz Snapdragon processor.  The TG01 operates on Windows Mobile 6.1, and Toshiba say they will upgrade this to Windows Mobile 6.5 when it is released. Like many phone manufacturers adopting the Microsoft OS Toshiba have tried to disguise it with their own interface, and the 3D Toshiba ‘split menu’ design is innovative and intuitive although perhaps not as glamorous as some of its rivals.

The TG01 features a very spacious 4.1” touch screen, with an 800 x 480 LED backlit display that improves dark movie scenes. The video playback, which features dynamic gamma correction, and the 3D touch interface certainly benefit from the Qualcomm 1GHz Snapdragon processor. The screen uses resistive technology rather than capacitive which may disappoint some, although this decision was made to allow for handwriting recognition.

The TG01 features an accelerometer which allows for gesture activated controls such as shaking the phone to answer a call. You can also switch between applications by tilting the device left and right. Although the camera is only 3.2 megapixels, it fits nicely into the slender 70 x 130 x 9.9mm device.

The TG01 has been criticised because despite its sleek design it does not offer much more than other Windows Mobile devices. While its 4.1” display is crystal clear the only feature that makes this phone stand out is the 1GHz processor. This is great for video playback and a smooth interface, although there are many phones available with better interfaces.

The Toshiba TG01 is available exclusively on Orange for £39.15 per month on a 24 month contract. The phone comes with 1,200 free minutes to any network and unlimited texts. There is also access to many Orange services including Orange World and Orange TV & Video that includes Sky 24/7 Football which certainly benefits from the Snapdragon processor and 3G connection.
