Phenomenal success of Apple App Store

app storeApple have recently announced that the number of applications downloaded from their popular App Store has exceeded 1.5billion. These figures released by Apple suggest that the App Store, which was introduced just one year ago, may very well be one the most successful mobile phone developments of all time.

The App Store which was introduced for the iPhone and iPod, allows users to download a host of entertaining applications and games to spruce up their devices. There are over 40 million iPhone and iPod users across 77 countries and the App Store allows each of them to download from a choice of over 65,000 applications and games.

While one billion downloads were made during the first 9 months of the App Store’s existence, a further 500 million downloads were made in the following 3 months. This puts the average number of downloads from the App Store at a staggering 6 million per day.

Part of the App Stores success has been due to Apple’s encouragement of third party application development. The success of the App Store has seen many other phone manufacturers follow suit with Nokia, Palm and RIM all bringing out their own versions. There has also been the development of similar services for competing phone OS’ Microsoft Windows Mobile and Google Android, with these services being included on phones like the soon to be released HTC Hero.

steve-jobsThe only criticism that has been levelled against the App Store is the way in which Apple have managed the development of applications. With many restrictions and regulations developers can be quite limited in what they can do. Apple decides what is appropriate and they do not allow the release of applications that will rival their own official services. While many other phones allow the freedom to download applications from anywhere on the internet, Apple users are restricted to using the App Store and the applications approved by Apple. This may help quality control but severely restricts the freedom and choice of users.

The phenomenal success of the App Store is not expected to slow down, but only get stronger, particularly with the release of the new iPhone 3GS.

Steve Jobs boasted, “The App Store is like nothing the industry has ever seen before in both scale and quality. With 1.5 billion apps downloaded, it is going to be very hard for others to catch up.”
