Apple Sells 2,000,000,000 Applications

app storeThat huge number represents the 2 billion applications Apple has sold over the past 14 months. The population of the entire world was at an estimated 6.7 billion in mid 2008 – so we are talking about 1 in every 3.35 people having bought an application from Apple; talk about world wide appeal!

Considered the fact that Apple’s app store for the iPod touch and iPhone only opened in July 2008, this number is absolutely mind shattering. The number of app downloads had reached 300 million by December of that year, before crossing the billion milestone in April 2009, then finally hitting 1.5 billion around the time of the stores first birthday in July this year.

Currently, there are over 50 million iPhone and iPod touch users across the world, meaning that Apple’s app store, with it’s 85,000 applications, has got a very large audience.

According to Steve Jobs, the CEO of Apple, “The rate of the App Store downloads continues to accelerate with users downloading a staggering two billions apps in just over a year, including more than half a billion apps this quarter alone.” – When you consider the success of the company it is no wonder that Steve Jobs has become a name everyone knows, even those who have little to no interest in technology.

The Apple app store has now started to segment, stocking applications in its library that will only with the iPhone 3GS, which has superior hardware and thus added functionality capabilities over the iPhone 3G.

With the rate of sales seeming to only grow stronger, it seems highly probably that by 2010 Apple will have reached an incredibly 3 billion app sales.
