HTC’s CEO seems to have the beat of the smart phone market: give people choices. This is the one thing that some successful companies that Apple fails to recognize, and in many ways, influence how people see a certain brand or company.
Take the Apple iPhone; it has always been a matter of having only one choice for Apple’s fans. Whether cut and paste is present or not, whether it has a camera or not, all these little things are decided by Apple and users who want an iPhone will not have a choice.
But by providing consumers with variety, choices and options, the market starts to flourish. Of course, the argument does sound a lot weaker considering that despite the stiff structure that Apple has provided consumers in terms of products; it is the Apple devices that have been able to sell the most in the fewest days –easily setting several sales records.
But make no mistake, the future is still about choice and that is something that various phone makers are now starting to provide for their consumers.
According to the big man himself, “HTC will let the consumer decide.” Thus goes the words of CEO Peter Chou, and seeing the first leaks of the upcoming HTC products, it is easily seen that the man does back his words.
The tablet industry is going to see a very solid range of devices from the Taiwan phone maker. Already we know that they will be working on Android and WP7 devices, but it has also been hinted that there will be variety in terms of screen size and other hardware issues.
HTC’s Scorpion handset, aimed to be released in 2011 is the current high end option for Android devices that HTC is offering, So far, no WP7 equivalent has been shown though we can also expect that a similar device will be in the works.

The Dell Streak is getting a much awaited Android 2.2 Froyo update this week –in case you have not heard. The first confirmations of this good news actually came out yesterday, but today, local network operator O2 has assured that Streak users under the network will be receiving the update automatically.
This is a major bit of happiness for those under networks. More often than not (and especially with Android updates) individual per-company releases of mobile platform versions often take months to arrive. This is actually the same case with the Dell Streak –the official launch of the Froyo version was around last June. While an update to 2.0 Éclair would have made sense earlier on, Dell opted to skip that point and just go straight to the latest version instead.
The Streak’s main feature is a 5 inch TFT capacitive touch screen display with a 480 x 800 resolution. The display is supported and protected by Gorilla Glass and also has an accelerometer and proximity sensor. The handset is also powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon CPU running at 1GHz.
In the meanwhile, Dell’s other smart phone, the Windows Phone 7 running Venue Pro, will not be available until next year. This is quite surprising as many expected the Venue Pro (which was previously named as the Dell Lightning) to launch alongside the Windows Phone 7 OS last October –along with many other WP7 devices as well.
Also powered by a 1GHz Snapdragon CPU, the Venue Pro would be the perfect device for the heavy smart phone user. The 4.1 inch AMOLED capacitive touch screen provides users with just the right amount of display space to fully enjoy the new MS made user interface. Lastly, the slide out physical QWERTY keyboard is a great addition. While the portrait orientation may throw some users off, it seems to be a pretty stable phone overall.

Skype has announced that it will be updated for the Android mobile platform –and the Samsung Galaxy S will finally be compatible with the VOIP service. This little bit of good news comes as another reason to go for Samsung’s already impressive Android handset. The Skype app is often hard to get for many users as not a lot of phones can support the feature –and the fact that local networks are not too happy about it either. In any case, the app is now officially available on the Android market.
Vodafone UK is certain that the Froyo update for the HTC Magic is certainly the way to go. The announcement yesterday was that the update will be selective and will not provide the ancient Android with all the new features of version 2.2, but will still be delivering an impressive array of new features that diehard fans of the older phone will certainly appreciate.
HTC has confirmed that they have several devices fully equipped with both NFC, dual core CPUs and 4G technology already in the works. LTE or long term evolution hardware changes standards a lot, and HTC wants to keep on top of the trends. HTC CEO Peter Chou also confirmed that he wants to pursue the use 4G technology.
3 UK, a local virtual network operator, has been confirmed that the unlimited browsing scheme is now back. Despite previous complaints by other network operators about the heavy consumption of bandwidth slowing down services to many users, 3 UK is offering the service to anyone subscribed to the 35 Pound monthly tariff –which is certainly quite tempting to many folks who consider the 500MB limit a little too low. Should we expect to see the returns of unlimited browsing on other networks as well? –that possibility is quite unlikely as 3 UK is a specialized 3G network.

Sad news for those waiting for Nokia’s upcoming E7 handset; the touch screen smart phone with a slide out QWERTY keyboard was originally due for release early next year. However, due to some unconfirmed reasons, the device has been indefinitely delayed.
Still, many are hopeful (even within Nokia’s camp) that whatever issue is holding the handset back will be fixed pretty soon.
This Symbian^3 powered handset is not the first of its type to be delayed –the Nokia N8 also suffered from the same problem. In fact, Nokia spent most of its time last year announcing further delays to the N-series device that was supposed to have launched last April. Eventually, the phone came out around October to November, which is probably one of the worst delays to have ever affected a smart phone’s launch.
The Nokia E7 delay is such a big shame since the handset is actually pretty impressive. In fact, one might even say that it is more well rounded that the N-series N8. The E7 is packed with an 8 mega pixel camera with 720p HD video recording, a 680MHz CPU with a 3D graphics accelerator, a 4 inch touch screen display and gorilla glass protection.
Moving on to good news, the HTC Magic will be getting an unexpected update: to Android 2.2 Froyo. The original generation 1 Android handset (next to the HTC Dream) is confirmed to be getting a special version of the new Froyo update for the open source mobile platform. So far, it has not been determined as to when the actual Vodafone exclusive (for now) update will arrive, but it is expected to be available by the end of the year.
As some might expect, not all features are supported –especially those that are resource draining such as Flash playback. But other details such as USB tethering and app support in micro SD cards are much welcome add-ons to the now-ancient smart phone.

For those who have never heard of the Dell Streak –you missed out. This is probably one of the biggest Android smart phones to ever be released; both figuratively and literally. In many ways, the Streak is Dell’s top contending Android device. Sure, the electronics manufacturer has several handsets under its brand, but none could possibly match up to the Streak.
But as we said, the Streak is also big in size –literally. The device pops out a large 5 inch capacitive touch screen display. The screen provides users with plenty of space for accurate navigation and of course, gestures. The larger screen may sound bulky, but once you have the device in your hands, it is impressive how ergonomically sound the whole handset is.
Anyway, the big news about this equally big phone is the fact that Google has finally come out with the Android 2.2 Froyo update for the Dell Streak. The actual patch has yet to be put up online, but the official statement is that the Froyo patch will come out by the end of the week so it will not be too much of a wait for fans of the Android OS.
For those worrying about the large screen, do not worry, all that 5 inches with 480 x 800 pixels of visual joy is fully protected by Gorilla Glass. The handset also comes with 16GB of internal memory, a 5 mega pixel camera with auto focus and dual LED flash. 720p HD video recording will be supported with the upcoming patch. Lastly, the handset is running on Qualcomm’s 1GHz Snapdragon CPU.
In other Android news, the launch of the LG Star worldwide might not take too long now. The device has already been released in South Korea as the LG Optimus 2X. Hopefully, the Android handset powered by the Tegra 2 CPU will be available in local store shelves by the end of the holidays.

The white version of the Samsung Android smart phone, the i9000 Galaxy S has just been made available in Germany. It has been out in the UK and in Spain for quite some time now, but if you missed it, they currently have plenty of stock in Germany.
Google’s Nexus S is now on pre-order availability. Orange, T-Mobile, Vodafone and O2 are all offering the handset and if you want it on for free on contract, the cheapest available is a 35 Pound monthly tariff good for 24 months.
Local users of the Samsung Galaxy S under Orange and T-Mobile will be sad to know that the Android 2.3 Gingerbread update will not be available until this coming January. The delay has gotten quite a reaction from those who are initially excited about the new update but considering that the wait should is not that long, this is still good news.
Apple’s latest issue with Jailbreaking seems to have taken an odd turn as they have just disabled a crucial API feature in the iOS: the specific function shut off is the one that specifically identifies which handsets are jailbroken and which are not.
This new decision has led to many into believing that Apple is taking a step away from its strong stance against the practice of jailbreaking though many also fear what this would mean for the many game and app developers that rely on online sales in order to make a profit. If Apple does cease to stand against jailbreaking, piracy on the iPhone is certain to spread. Many believe that the decision by Apple is heavily influenced by the fact that the US government has deemed jailbreaking to be a completely legal practice.
Finally, the initial specs of the new Motorola tablet has been confirmed, aside from having a 1GHz NVIDIA Tegra 2 CPU, Andy Rubin’s little gadget sports a 1280 x 800 resolution, 7 inch capacitive touch screen, a 5 mega pixel camera and of course, the Android Honeycomb OS.

Smart phone technology has allowed us to become more reliant on these mobile devices than we have ever thought possible. While it may not seem that we store anything truly delicate on our iPhones and our HTC Desires, a closer look reveals that losing a smart phone is akin to showing off to the world a lot more important things than you ever thought possible. So if you think that losing a smart phone is not an issue, here’s a quick look at why such an event could be very, very bad.
First off, your contact list: this little bit of information is particularly tough to have in someone else’s hands. From the onset, the entire list could be sold to marketers and similar groups –often with the sad result of the people in the list receiving an avalanche of advertisements and spam. Thanks to the fact that contacts lists now have provisions for the name, phone number, email and even physical address, you might want to think twice about letting the entire world know where some of your most special friends live.
If you use the browser or a social networking app, then chances are, you have your own account names, emails and your passwords stored in the device as well. This could open up a lot of sensitive information and all your passwords may be opened by really skilled hackers.
GPS information may not seem like a big deal, but in reality, it exposes your everyday routes, favorite stores, where you live, where you work and even which pubs you prefer to relax in. Add in location based features such as Foursquare and any stalker will be happy to have an hour studying your phone’s vast wealth of information.
Media is another issue as well. Since most phones have cameras, it is not too uncommon that folks would have pictures of that wild drinking spree last Halloween in their mobile phones –and none would be too happy to see it made available to everyone online.

When Google first came up with the Nexus One, they specifically stated that they had no notions of an iPhone killer or anything of the sort. The self-branded handset was meant to set a bar for the smart phone industry in terms of what the Android platform can truly be.
Now, almost a full year later, we see the fruition of the second Nexus handset to come about. And regardless of how one looks at it, the Nexus S is truly an iPhone killer. To fully appreciate this, one simply has to look at the basis of the Nexus S –which is Samsung’s i9000 Galaxy S which has been meant as the Korean phone maker’s rival product against the Apple iPhone.
According to various sources, the new Google super phone will be shipping to the UK pretty soon and four major network operators have confirmed that they will be offering the handset as soon as it arrives. O2 Mobile, Vodafone UK, T-Mobile UK and Orange UK have all confirmed that the new Google handset will be available on both SIM free and tariff deals –providing users with a choice. The phone is reportedly going to be free at 35 Pound monthly tariff deals and up.
Specs wise, there is little doubt that the Nexus S is poised to take on the iPhone. IT eve packs the new NFC hardware technology that Apple jumped in early to invest in –not that the technology is already seeing practical use today, but Google certainly does not want to be left out when the technology finally does.
With the latest Android 2.3 Gingerbread OS, HD video, a 1.2 GHz CPU and a large library of applications from the Android Market, the Google Nexus S will be offering a tough fight against Apple’s iPhone series.

For those of you who are hoping to great a great budget deal for a mobile phone this holiday season, Finnish phone maker Nokia has a great package that may seem expensive at first, but actually provides users with plenty of value.
Go straight to Nokia’s official online store to avail of a special offer for the Nokia X3-02 Touch and Type smart phone. The handset is available for free at a monthly tariff of 40 Pounds per month. This 2 year contract will provide the user with 1200 minutes, 1GB of data and unlimited texting. While this may seem like a commonly fair deal, Nokia tops it off with a sweet free Nokia Booklet 3G. This mini-netbook and smart phone combination is a great combination that smart phone enthusiasts would not want to pass up.
There are three awesome Android smart phones coming our way, two from Chinese manufacturer Huawei and another from Acer.
Acer is continuing the beTouch series of smart phones with the E140. This low end smart phone might be passed up on its low specs, but we suspect that it will also come with a very low price tag that will make it a tempting offer. Overall, the 2.8 inch touch screen and the 3.2 mega pixel camera leave much to be desired –but at least the device is already running version 2.2 Froyo so this is still one good Android experience waiting to happen.
Huawei has got a double offer for the tech industry with the Ideos X5 and X6 handsets. For those familiar with the brand series, Ideos is Huawei’s special line of Android phones and the two new additions live up to the standard. The X6 offers high end specs with a 1GHz CPU, 4.1 inch screen, HDMI, HD recording and a 5 mega pixel camera. The X5 will be sporting slightly lowers specs to provide buyers with an alternative.

The Bada operating system has just celebrated its first year in the smart phone industry. With now well over a million devices sold and plenty more expected, the Samsung made mobile platform is certainly carving out its own niche. Admittedly, the system still has to go a long way (and it is a pretty small niche), but considering how new the system is and that this is Samsung’s first proprietary system, the performance of the Bada is quite impressive.
Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10 owners will finally get to try out the Android 2.3 Gingerbread mobile platform. However, this will not be through an officially released update. The features will be running straight from a ROM emulator. While this provides little practical use, it does prove that the X10 does have the hardware needed to run the new OS.
HTC has announced that the Wildfire smart phone will also be getting an update to Google’s Android 2.2 Froyo. The announcement just came in right after they officially stated that the HTC Legend will be updated just a day ago. The big announcement is certainly great news for the owners of the communication based Wildfire handset.
Huawei’s Ideos smart phone is now officially available in local stores. According to sources, the new budget Android will be priced at a nice 150 Pound price tag. Those who have been hoping to start switching to the Android might find this device as a great fit since it is also available for free when under a contract. Mobile retailer eXpansys currently has the device in stock.
Samsung is making people enticed to by the Galaxy Tab touch screen tablet. According to reports, buying a Tab now will net users with 200 GBP worth of media content. The limited offer deal will be running from this December until the first week of February and provides users with over 50 tracks from eMusic, 15 films from the Samsung online store, 7 Gameloft titles and 5 eBooks -pretty sweet deal for a holiday tablet.
