XPERIA Series: Windows Phone 7 is Coming

For those who are not familiar with the earlier XPERIA smart phones, it is an easily forgotten fact by now that the first devices in the series are actually Windows Mobile handsets and not the Android phones that we know today.

The WinMo phones had been put behind in a forgotten memory by many in the tech industry as the XPERIA X1 and X2 handsets have proved to devices that failed to live up to the hype and more importantly, the expensive price tag.

The arrival of the Android OS broke new ground for the XPERIA brand, with the X10 showing the world that Sony Ericsson can make great high end handsets, and finally bringing the company’s continuous financial decline into a complete turn-around. Now, it seems that the XPERIA series has come full circle. With devices such as the Android X10, X10 Mini and X10 Mini Pro bringing SE branded phones back to top lists and best reviewed devices, the upcoming X7 is a blast from the past: it uses a Microsoft mobile platform.

The good news is that the XPERIA X7 will not be Windows Mobile handsets, instead they will use the Windows Phone 7 mobile platforms. This big change has been pretty much expected from Sony Ericsson as the Japanese Swedish joint venture’s name has been brought up numerous times in the listings for manufacturers working on Windows Phone 7 handsets.

As of the moment, initial details for the X7 and the XPERIA X7 Mini smart phones are limited to the leaked images of the specifications. Mostly, the devices fit into Microsoft’s pre-requisite hardware needs, though a few upgrades are pretty noticeable too. One of the most noticeable details is the use of a 4.3 inch touch screen display which is certain to make many media fans happy. The X7 Mini will naturally have slightly lower specs –mostly the exact base requirements for WP7.
