Google Android: Developer Limbo

With the Apple iPhone 4’s overall market performance proving to be more disappointing than it first turned out to be, many industry analysts are predicting a slow but steady shift in balance from Apple to Google.

Google’s Android platform is gaining plenty of ground at an amazing scale. The OS has already passed the Apple iOS and RIM’s BlackBerry OS in terms of market dominance. Right now, the only other platform in the Android’s way is the Symbian OS which has been slowly getting weaker in the phone industry.

With the upcoming launch of Nokia’s MeeGo operating system, it is likely that the Symbian is already on its way down, and Android’s continued growth will only accelerate the descent even faster.

But where does this bit of news leave developers?

For many smart phone users, apps have been the core of many great features and functions. Be it the Apple iPhone or the Google Nexus One, the fact of the matter is that apps help make mobile phones more useable and fun to have.

With Apple’s previous reign in the industry with the iPhone 3G touch screen smart phone, developers has a very strong market to deal with thanks to the Apple iTunes store. Countless studies and research has shown that users of Apple devices are far more likely to make online purchases through their mobile devices as compared to users of other platforms. Despite the fact that the Android is growing, Apple still promises a larger app economy –which is a major consideration for developers.

Even with Google’s growth, the inviting environment that an open source platform provides and the fact that Google’s Android Market is not as strict or as limiting as the iTunes Store, developers still prefer to create apps for the iOS. After all, profits are the true basis of being able to sustain a business.
