It really seems that 3D really is the rage these days –at least, for the media industry. And while smart phones are also considered to be multimedia devices (they can play music and videos after all), 3D on a handset is not quite as practical or as inventive as one might think it to be.
No, these are not the same 3D holographic projectors that people see in science fiction movies, but rather, the same old effect of 3D objects popping out of the screen just as one would expect from a movie theater running a 3D version of a movie.
While that certainly works on the gigantic screens of movie houses (where the additional fact that the location is completely dark adds to the visual effect of items, and things zipping towards the viewer), it does not have the same effect on a smaller touch screen. Imagine seeing cars popping out of a 3.7 inch AMOLED capacitive touch screen: exactly, it does not work as well as it would in a large screen. At best, the effect is hardly noticeable, at worst, the off colored natural screen view is annoying to deal with.
Sharp seems to be believe that there is a future for 3D in mobile phones; in fact, the phone maker is intent on developing a new handset that will utilize the technology.
Despite the fact that their previous smart phone, the Microsoft Kin, failed to gain any market value –as the device was scrapped before it even hit the UK (Microsoft is now focusing entirely on the upcoming Windows Phone 7 operating system). Sharp seems to have a key interest in developing a smart phone with a 3D screen. In any case, we are certain that this will be using parallax technology (as having to wear 3D glasses for a mobile phone would be a ridiculous nuisance).
