Sony Ericsson has already confirmed that the Yendo mobile phone is going to be launched in the next few months.
While it is disappointing to know that the initial rumors about the handset being an Android device are all wrong, we are still happy to find out that Sony is still going to be using Walkman technology when they make mobile phones. The Yendo is the first Walkman handset in quite some time, and from the looks of it, it was worth the wait.
At first glance, the device is pretty smart phone looking; it comes with a large touch screen display on the front, a small camera hole in the back and very few buttons on the body –one on the front and a couple on the sides. But taking a closer look, one cannot help the subtle details that Sony has put into the phone; the small Walkman logo on the lower right instantly identifies the phone for what it is.
The metallic, slightly curved button below the screen accentuates the matter gray look of the front. On the back of the phone, the long gap for the loudspeakers gives the back casing a sense of design balance (along with the camera in the center).
Specs wise, the phone is a pretty standard 2G handset. It uses a 2.6 inch resistive touch screen display with a resolution of 320 x 240 pixels. Since the screen is resistive, touch based controls are not as efficient –but possible. Still, the lack of gestures is hard to get used to when browsing. Also, the lack of WiFi support means having to rely on EDGE and GPRS for internet access (which is a shame, since the device comes loaded with integrated Facebook and Twitter apps).
According to Sony Ericsson, the Yendo is expected to be available in the next couple of months.
