Symbian Os: Not Doing Well

symbianAsk any Nokia handset fan and they would tell you that the Finnish phone maker has very close ties with the Symbian Foundation. The earliest handsets for Nokia used the Symbian OS and until today, the platform is being used by a wide variety of mobile phone makers, including Sony Ericsson.

Despite this, it seems that the public perception regarding the Symbian OS is pretty low, and this has more to do with the issues of the OS itself than the fact that public interest in Nokia handsets is also waning.

Without a doubt, the S60 platform and the older versions of the OS has failed to make a lasting impression on smart phone users. With other operating systems such as the Google Android, the BlackBerry OS and the iOS offering more features and capabilities, the Symbian is turning into an archaic platform that everyone has ‘already tried out’.

But it seems that the Symbian Foundation is not about to let this become the end of their illustrious part in the mobile phone industry. In fact, it seems that the Symbian^3 operating system is going to be packed with so many new features and capabilities that it might as well be a completely new operating system –or so that is what they would want us to think.

The early tech demos and the initial reactions of Nokia’s head of mobile solutions certainly point towards a promising start for the new OS while at the same time, Nokia’s confirmation that the N-series handsets would be having the N8 as the only Symbian handset is somewhat discouraging to hear.

Nokia already made a similar announcement last year when the Maemo operating system was announced and they decided that the Symbian would be taking a back seat to the Maemo. Then, the MeeGo came along; the Symbian OS would still not be a major part of the N-series, but the Maemo will be replaced with the new platform.
