Now Available: Acer’s Android Smart Phone

AcerStreamDell and Asus are not the only electronics manufacturers that have decided to expand from making computers to making mobile phones (oh, and Apple too). Acer has also joined the market. The company has been working with Garmin for a while but this new smart phone running Google’s open source mobile platform (the Android OS) is one of the very first Acer devices to be launched. The Acer Stream is available locally in the UK, but only through online retailer eXpansys.

With so many other Android devices out on the market, one might ask, why bother with the Acer Stream. After all, the other choices are also pretty good: Google’s Nexus One is basically the way the Android is truly meant to be (and it gets priority updates from Google too). HTC has already been established as key partners in the development of the OS, making the Desire and the Legend equally worth getting.

Sony Ericsson offers style and unmatched form factor with the XPERIA X10 while Samsung gives superior visual quality with the super AMOLED screen of the Galaxy S. Even Dell’s Mini 5 Streak comes with a large touch screen display at 5 inches.

The Stream on the other hand, focuses heavily on HD video. The camera is only 5 mega pixels –not different from the other devices, but it also records videos at 720p HD quality and more importantly, the phone comes with a mini HDMI output port.

The device also has a very unique form factor –which is pretty important for those people who want devices that nobody else seems to have. Identity will never be an issue with the Stream as its online-only accessibility will certainly see less circulation among smart phone users.

As expected, the device runs the 2.1 Android Éclair and that an update to version 2.2 is already in the works.
