Samsung Wave Handsets from Germany Have Infected SD Cards

samsung-waveIt appears that the 1GB micro SD card that comes packed with Samsung Wave handset that was shipped to Germany is infected with a virus that will infect any Windows computer. With that said, anyone who has decided to get the handset might want to not stick the device into the USB slot of their computers.

The discovery was made early on by some folks who were able to get some German stocks of the Bada smart phone. Of course, the big warning for users: do not plug in the Wave smart phone into your computer if you have one.

The virus is specifically located in the 1GB SD card, which means that if your Wave handset does not come with an SD card at all it may not be among the infected units that were shipped to Germany. According to UK retailers, the one available locally (or at least, the ones shipped directly to the UK) do not have the 1GB card in the package.

As to why the handset comes with an infected flash drive however, Samsung has not given any explanations. In fact, the Korean company is keeping a no comment policy for the time being, but with the importance of this little issue, we can probably expect an official statement to be released shortly.

This latest virus scare is not the first time an electronic device came with malware; there has been a very long history of software installers, devices and other peripherals that have been pre-loaded with Trojans and malware. Fortunately, most of these issues can be resolved or even prevented easily by having good antivirus software loaded into a computer.

For Samsung, this latest turn of events could not have come at a worse time. The Bada operating system is making its debut with the Wave smart phone, and the last thing they need right now is virus scare with their handset.
