Social networking genius Mark Zuckerberg announced that he has recently turned 26 and has been looking back at how far Facebook has grown.
Indeed, for a site that originally started out as a crude college directory –which basically served as a dating resource, the site has grown tremendously, spanning many countries all over the world and linking so many lives together. In the recent years, Facebook’s influence in the tech industry and the world is unmistakable. Leaders and officials saw the networking power of the social networking site when it was used as a tool for communication in order to bring light to many domestic conflicts that would have never seen journalistic coverage.
Facebook also served as an efficient coordination tool when many volunteers from all over the world needed a way to get in touch with each other in order to bring help and relief during the two major earthquakes.
Indeed, at only 26, Mark Zuckerberg singlehandedly created what might possibly be the most successful and influential social networking platform ever made.
But with this great progress also come plenty of pitfalls. As one might expect, the reason Facebook went past its life during Zuckerberg’s college years was because the man knew that the network had serious potential as a source of financial income.
However, balancing private information with advertising is one of the biggest juggling acts one can ever manage –you can only go so far with making data publicly available before people start feeling uncomfortable; and for good reason too. As a social networking site, there is plenty of room for information, both from users and their own contacts. The privacy scare not only concerns secrets that users have, but anything that their friends can post about them as well.
There is no doubt that Facebook will continue growing bigger from here on in, and we can only hope that with each birthday, Mark Zuckerberg gets closer to the maturity that is needed by his overgrowing website.
