Recently, information regarding Dell’s need smart phone and tablet hybrid, the Dell Streak. Comparable to the iPad in looks and usage, this new phone is a sleek choice for those wishing to dabble in the realm of the tablets. The streak is essentially a Dell smart phone with a bigger screen, and easier portability, relative to the bulkier non-tablet smart phones. We will keep you posted on all the Dell Streak deals as they become available.
Display
The Dell Streak features a highly pixel dense 5-inch screen, built from Gorilla Glass. The Gorilla Glass is stronger than other commercially used glass, meaning this screen will be stronger than the standard phone touch screen, and will be less prone to cracking when dropped. Curious consumer testing has revealed that the solid Gorilla Glass is touch stuff; it is virtually indestructible placed into common everyday situations. The Glass can survive serious drops, as well as survive scratches and nicks. The display has a resolution of 800×480 pixels, which converts to over 186 PPI (Pixels per Inch). Compared to the iPad, which has a 1280×768 pixel resolution over a 9.7 inch screen (A bit over 130 PPI), the Dell Streak has a sharper-looking image.
Performance
The Streak sports a 1GHz Snapdragon ARM-based processor, which is a powerful core that will allow quick phone response time. Some would be surprised to hear that the phone only has 256MB of RAM (Random Access Memory), however. This means although the Dell Streak will be quick to perform tasks, it will not be able to run multiple programs at once effectively.
The phone also runs on the newly updated Google Android operating system, which has been refined by Dell for maximum performance.
Visual Media
Dell’s new tablet offers a modern 5 MP camera, which means the phone can take high-resolution pictures. The phone’s camera has auto focus capabilities as well, which ensures that your photos are not blurry, and that you are making the most of those 5 MP when it comes to shooting a sharp, enjoyable photo. The flash on the camera is dual-LED, which surpasses the standard of little to no flash capability. Dual-LED flash enables the user to still take sharp, well-lit photos even in poorly-lit environments. The camera can also take 5 MP resolution video, right from this sleek phone. The camera is also front-facing, meaning one can take photos and videos of themselves easily. This also opens doors to the possibility of video-chat on updated models.
The phone can upload both photos and videos with ease to sites like Facebook, Twitter, and Youtube, which is very helpful, cutting out lots of time uploading the media to your computer, processing it, and then uploading it to the final website. For those avid social networkers, this capability means that you can stay connected to your social network, as well as seriously contribute to it, straight from your phone.
Audio Media
The Dell Streak uses a standard 3.5mm headphone jack, which enables users to listen to their music in private and on the go. This also means once can connect their Streak to their car stereo, and use it as a source of music in a variety of situations.
Where the new tablet really shines, though, is radio. The Streak uses 12 GSM radio link speeds of up to 7.2Mbps, meaning you’ll be hearing a very clear sound, little to no delay, and you’ll have access to a vast amount of radio channels. Combined with the 3.5mm headphone jack, the tablet becomes a great radio player for those who want to listen to something other than their music library from their phone. Storage
The new Dell Streak is outstanding when it comes to storage capacity. The phone uses a standard microSD card, with a capacity of up to 32GB (Which translates to 8,000 songs at 4MB per song, or 32 full length movies at 1GB per film). The card is removable, so once can easily transfer a bulk amount of audio or visual media from the phone’s card using a card reader. This method is a lot more efficient when dealing with a large number of files, since messaging each file separately would take an enormous amount of time.
As far as built in internal storage, the Streak has 2GB, still a solid baseline of storage if you aren’t willing to shell out the extra bucks for such a large microSD card.
Apps & Software
The Dell Streak has access to nearly 40,000 currently available apps (a number that is always rising), through the built in App Store in the phone’s operating system.
Integrated into the phone is a Social Networking feature which allows you to connect to sites such as Facebook, Youtube, and Twitter easily and keep up to date with the activity in your circle. Another integrated app is Google Maps. Not only can you find directions right from your phone, but it can be set up with voice-activation, as well as the full arsenal of Google Map capabilities, such as street view, turn by turn directions, and more.
The Streak runs on a 3G network, which is standard when it comes to smart phones today. It also has Bluetooth compatibility, so headsets are great accessory for this tablet.
For those of us without an expensive data plan, the phone can use WiFi as well as its normal 3G network for connecting to the web.
Who is this Phone/Tablet For?
The Dell Streak is most suitable for the tech-savvy consumer, who has some experience in smart phones, but is interested in trying something more like a tablet. While retaining some of the core features of a smart phone, the Streak’s pixel dense 5-inch screen is large enough for an outstanding visual experience, something not as easily available in a smart phone.
Although pricing information has not been released, once can expect it to be priced between the normal smart phone and the iPad. Although at first glance the Streak seems to be Dell’s response to the iPad, Dell has stated that a full tablet model will also be released, which would of course be more similar to the iPad.
