The man is often considered to be an indirect spokesperson for Apple. While the Cupertino based company does not pay, sponsor or have signed up Stephen Fry as an official endorser, many in the tech industry already know that the man is a staunch supporter of many things Apple and for good reason too.
Fry was available last Friday joining in and looking at the many people who have already formed long queues for the opening of many Apple stores in order to buy the Apple iPad. When asked what he was doing there, Fry replied that he was there as a music fan might go to a record store on the launch date of a new album; it was an event, and it was something cultural.
Indeed, the man is actually on to something there. For many years now, it has become a global phenomenon for people to actually line up and camp in front of stores in order to be the first in line. As long as forming a small congregation is not illegal in the area, any store could be the site of such a launch event.
There is no need for actual celebrities of the creators of the product to even be there; the product itself is what the crowd has gathered for. While many of the people will certainly socialize and find new friends among the other people in line, the main goal is to buy the new item. Speaking of making friends, it is easy to find a common interest with people who are willing to camp out for as long as you –talking about the upcoming launch item itself is already an easy way to start a conversation. Advertisers are also known to take advantage of these crowds; the iPad launch alone saw promotions for various paid apps.
