There is no doubt that plenty of people will be waiting for any and all updates straight from Steve Jobs’ presentation at the upcoming WWDC in order to get the latest scoop on the next generation Apple iPhone, but is the public about to be impressed or disappointed?
Of course, it would be hard to predict how everything will fall into place, but there is one thing that is certain, for the next generation Apple handset, the new iPhone seems terribly underpowered. Spec wise, the new device will certainly be able to match up to its biggest competitors, the newer Android handsets.
But the Nexus One, HTC Desire and even the XPERIA X10 are about to be phased out by the upcoming Motorola Shadow, HTC Scorpion and many other devices. Even upcoming handsets for Microsoft’s Windows Phone 7 mobile platform are geared to be on the very high end scale of things.
As we have seen with the previous iPhone, it will take more than just great hardware to keep a device successful; the older iPhone is hardly anywhere near the specs of its modern day competitors and yet it is still successful. But with the elements that made Apple a huge hit (easy to use, plenty of apps, stylish look) now present in many other devices, it seems unlikely that the new Apple device will be able to provide a repeat performance.
In some ways, it is a relief to know that some of the gimmicky features that were featured in rumors have been confirmed to be gone (such as the touch sensitive casing), as it would have turned the new iPhone into a novelty device as opposed to a dedicated smart phone. The 4.0 OS is also bound to give the device plenty of the much needed functionality that people want from Apple’s handsets.
