Nokia N8 Review

Nokia N8Announced on April 27th, a much-anticipated 4G offering from Nokia comes in the form of the Nokia N8. Expected to compete with the iPhone 4G and its Android counterparts such as the Nexus One, the Nokia N8 is a high-end powerhouse loaded full of smartphone features running on the brand-new Symbian^3 platform.  Expected to be available in the third quarter of 2010, the ultra high-end smartphone is loaded with features, and will cost about £320 before taxes and subsidies.

With the adoption of the new Symbian^3 platform, the N8 has picked up a number of new features such as multi-touch and gesture-based navigation and interaction, including gestures like pinch-to-zoom found on other mobile devices. To streamline your experience and interaction with the N8, there are three customizable homescreens with support for custom placement and selection of applications, shortcuts, and widgets as well as different coloured themes and wallpapers that can be switched with a simple flick across the screen, all contributing to a much more intuitive and responsive UI than other phones may have offered in the past. To help keep track of all of your applications and widgets is a visual task manager, allowing for quick management of various services that may be running at any given time, and improved 2D and 3D graphics makes the entire experience much more aesthetically-pleasing.

Nokia N8 3Continuing in this vein of innovation, the N8 will feature a new style of camera that is reported to rival dedicated cameras in terms of photo and video quality. Facial recognition software, Carl Zeiss optics, autofocus, touchscreen 16:9 viewfinder, and Xenon flash combine to make the N8 feel just like a professional dedicated camera, all in a mobile device that fits in the palm of your hand. With a photo sensor much larger than any other Nokia device and even larger than many dedicated camera systems, the 12-megapixel camera captures images and video in incredible detail. Using this new camera technology, the N8 is capable of recording 720p high definition video in either H.264 or MPEG-4 formats and editing it with built-in editing software, or you can edit your photos with the photo editing suite.

Online Share gives you easy access to Facebook, Flickr, and other popular sharing services, making it a snap to upload your favourite photos and videos and share them with your friends and family. To get the most out of the N8′s ability to capture video and photos in stunning HD quality, the N8 features a vivid, clear 3.5” 16:9 (640 x 360 pixels) nHD OLED display capable of displaying 16.7 million colours with capacitive touch screen technology in addition to an HDMI connection that allows you to stream your footage to an HD TV or digital projector and watch it on the big screen.

Nokia N8 (2)All of this HD technology combines to make the N8 a great pocket-sized entertainment centre, allowing you to watch videos in Dolby Digital Plus surround sound—compatible with home theatre systems—or connect to streaming web TV stations like CNN or National Geographic to watch news and TV shows on the go, with more of your favourite channels available from the Ovi Store. If you’re feeling in the mood for music instead, the N8 has plenty of room for all of your favourite songs, allowing up to 50 hours of playback as you browse through your library via album artwork using the Nokia Ovi Player. PC support for the Ovi Player allows you to sync your libraries and playlists between your computer and N8 mobile, keeping all your favourite tunes available at home or on the ho, and plenty more can be found on the Ovi Store.

Not content to be a one-trick pony focusing only on multimedia, the N8 also seamlessly integrates social networking into your mobile experience; update your Facebook status, create events, upload photos and video, read and send messages, or tweet directly from the homescreen; view all of your social networking data in a single application, all with a simple touch of the screen. The Nokia Messaging Client allows for easy access to multiple accounts on popular e-mail services at once, with support for multiple protocols and attachments to give you easy access to all your communication. Instant messaging support and SMS conversational views allow you to keep in touch with all your friends whenever you like through Ovi Chat, Yahoo, AIM, Windows Live and many other popular chat services. Additionally, the N8 comes with location-awareness, allowing you to geotag your photos and Facebook/Twitter updates, or take advantage of the integrated GPS system. With free lifetime navigation services, the Ovi Maps application can help you navigate through more than 70 different countries around the globe, giving you turn-by-turn voice instructions to keep you on track. Along with Ovi Maps comes the wide variety of services included in the Ovi Suite as well as all of the applications, games, and productivity software available on the Ovi Store. If you still can’t find that exact application you need, the N8 is Nokia’s first smartphone to feature integration with the Qt software development environment, making It a breeze to build and deploy your own custom apps for the Symbian platform, or any other platforms that might be of interest.

Nokia N8 4To go along with its crisp new display and HD capabilities is an outward appearance to match. The N8 is fashioned out of a single piece of anodised aluminium coated in silver white, dark grey, orange, blue, or green for a bold, modern appearance. Housed inside the casing is 16GB of internal memory, with support available for up to 32 GB more via microSD expansion cards, as well as secondary video camera for video calls. The N8 also makes it easy to keep track of all of your data, allowing you to view photos by tag cloud, month, album, or in a slide show view and sync all of your information between your PC and mobile device using MS Outlook. Wi-Fi connectivity and Java support allow you to surf the web from a wireless access point, or access a 4G network and experience broadband speeds over a mobile connection. The N8 also supports software updates over the internet, allowing you to keep your phone on the cutting-edge with the latest advances in support and features.
