NVIDIA’s all in one chipset technology has been the talk of the computer industry in the past few months. It comes as to no surprise that their efforts into pushing for a smaller and energy efficient yet high capacity hardware has resulted in a device that translates well into the technology to be used in smart phones.
Their Tegra hardware technology first appeared when Microsoft announced the Kin handsets –a couple of Windows CE based smart phones that would give people a quick teaser on how the social networking functions of the upcoming WP7 OS would work. For now, the handset is still pretty limited in function and capabilities as the phone’s hardware are practically mid range.
NVIDIA’s name popped up once again at Web 2.0 Expo where Google spokespersons gave out a quick hint that the Android running touch screen tablet (which was demonstrated to be capable of running Flash content), was running on NVIDIA technology. While they did not give out further details, the teaser was more than enough to let the industry know that the tablet was probably using GPU technology.
Now, it has been confirmed that the NVIDIA Tegra will be used as the hardware for upcoming Android smart phones. This practically cements NVIDIA’s presence in the mobile phone industry.
So far, there is no word yet on which new Android devices will be using the new hardware, but it is expected that the next device in the Nexus series would have NVIDIA powered hardware.
Google has been gaining plenty of support and partners in the development of the Android operating system. HTC is one of the core members of the Open Handset Alliance and is a key developer of the Android. Adobe has also been brought to the fold, providing the Android with native Flash and AIR support (Adobe also stated that they will be making HTML5 software as well.
