More VOIP on the Apple iPhone

FringOne of the biggest challenges to creating an Apple App is more than just the programming design, it is also in creating an application that would pass the very tight standards on the Apple App store (though some occasional weird apps do make it –like the “I am Rich” application released a couple of years back).

Anyway, a major functionality that people have been hoping to get on the iPhone is VOIP –or simply put, free internet voice calls. Just last week, Google gave out great news that the Google Voice online service would now be accessible through a browser, allowing iPhone users to access VOIP without the usual app limitations (the same goes for users of Palm OS). That same week, Apple has also announced that they would be releasing the SDK for the iPhone –giving many developers access to key functionalities of the device.

The release of the SDK prompted Fring to work on their VOIP application for the device. The app is already out and many expect Skype to follow suit shortly afterwards.

The release of a VOIP application on the iPhone will certainly be good news to iPad users. As the tablet would be unable to access voice calls and SMS messages (the 3G connection is only for online data transfer) having a VOIP application would certainly boost the value of the device.

Back to the iPhone, Fring will be giving current users access to a feature that has long been withheld by Apple. With many iPhone users already hooked up on a mobile plan for 3G, this app would make for an excellent cheaper alternative to making voice calls. If you love to make voice calls but have been bogged down by the high costs of calling, then using Fring would help cut down on costs.
